Brief History of Distance Learning

Distance learning has evolved dramatically over 180 years, transforming from simple correspondence courses to digital platforms.

  • The first distance education began in the 1840s, relying entirely on “snail” (postal) mail. Colleges and universities began using this model in the 1890s.
  • In the 1920s, radio broadcasts featured educational content with very limited interactivity.
  • The UK premiered Open University (televised degree programs in the late 1960s).
  • CBT (computer-based training) made its appearance in the 1980s, with email providing faster student/instructor communication.
  • Beginning in the 1990s, the World Wide Web (internet) changed EVERYTHING. Learning management systems (LMS) enabled fully online degree programs, and more sophisticated options proliferated.
  • Today’s distance learning features mobile accessibility, personalization, real-time global collaboration, and so much more. The shutdowns of 2020 – 2022 accelerated and necessitated adoption worldwide, making online and hybrid learning mainstream.

From one-way postal courses to interactive, personalized digital experiences, distance learning has become an accessible, effective educational method serving millions globally.
